Here the Trust owns England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and deepest lake, Wastwater, which is surrounded by impressive scree slopes. Almost the whole of the head of Wasdale is NT-owned, including Great Gable and the famous historic wall patterns at the valley head. Lower down the valley is the wooded and tranquil Nether Wasdale Estate. Over 7000ha (17,000 acres) and eleven farms are covered. In neighbouring Eskdale, Trust protection covers extensive areas of fell, six farms and Hardknott Roman Fort. In the beautiful Duddon valley the Trust cares for almost 3000ha (7400 acres) and nine farms.
